I’m a student at UWL and i am interested in getting to know what this group is about (other than just linux), what should I do? (I have a friend who is also interested in this).

This site is not very active, The Linux User Group is active though https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/lacrosselug, about 9 months ago we tried a forum instead of the email group, but it never caught on
Also https://www.facebook.com/LaCrosseAreaInventorsGuild/ is a maker’s type group ( Not affiliated with LCLUG but you mentioned that you where looking for other non linux things as well )
